Home Drywall: Texturing & Painting

Hey… we’ve all been there. You look at your kitchen, bathroom or any room in your house and think to yourself – “this room needs to change”. Something isn’t right (or maybe, let’s face it, a lot of things aren’t right) – and you’re sick of looking at your deteriorating home drywall. So, you find yourself sketching out ideas, ripping pages from magazines, imagining your new-and-improved space.

Home Drywall Has All The Answers!

Texture on your walls and ceilings can be a great way to add some pizazz to your home and to help blend the old with the new while remodeling. Textures give smooth, flat walls and ceilings a new dimension that enhances a room. And if you have some problem walls, the texture hides minor imperfections in the drywall installation.  Whula… just like that!

From the lightest of stipples to the heaviest of Mediterranean swirls, the texture on your walls and ceilings does a lot to create your home’s specific look and feel. It can also be a fun way to change your home’s appearance.

By adjusting mixture consistency and/or varying the atomizing pressure, contractors can create custom effects from spray spatter and spatter knockdowns to orange peel finishes.

Many homeowners are mixing and matching textures depending on different architectural preferences. A light orange peel with a heavy knockdown is a popular ceiling treatment.

Some of the more typical textures you may find are:

Regular Texture
Also called popcorn texture, this is the standard of the ceiling textures. It is a polystyrene beaded texture that has 100% coverage. Almost all manufacturers recommend priming the ceiling prior to application for a better bond and to reduce the possibilities of color variations bleeding through the bare sheetrock surface.

Knockdown
Knockdown can be applied from light brocade to a heavy Spanish/Mediterranean look. Knockdown needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 50 -75% of total surface coverage.

Fog/Knockdown Ceilings
This is the cream of the crop when it comes to knockdown textures. This procedure requires one day of drying time between applications. A fog is applied to the ceiling first to allow it equal absorption rate before the final knockdown is applied. It may be left as a two-tone look or it can be painted over.

Splatter
Splatter can be applied as small as a pencil lead to as large as a dime. Splatter needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 30 – 70% of total coverage.

Orange Peel
It literally looks like the skin of an orange – a good alternative to the smooth look. Orange Peel needs to be painted; it is only a partial covering of the surface. 70 – 95% of total surface coverage.

Fog or Smooth
Fog was designed as an alternative to skim coating ceilings and walls. It helps alleviate the difference between the texture of the paper on the sheetrock and the sanded drywall joints. Fog needs to be painted as it is not washable and is not designed as a finished product.

Home Drywall: DIY vs Hiring a Pro!

The first thing to decide is whether you want to tackle this project solo or call in the pros. While drywall texturing can be done by DIYers, many homeowners elect to hire a Minnesota Home Drywall & Sheetrock Contractor because the job can be extremely messy. Plus, because the mix of the drywall needs to be fairly precise, these variations should probably be left to a professional.
